Black stoneware clay is a grogged, structurally strong stoneware clay developed for sculptural stability, controlled drying, and reduced cracking.
The presence of grog improves strength in larger forms, supports carving, and helps the clay maintain form during drying and firing.
This body is especially suited for handbuilt sculpture, textured surfaces, and architectural or thick-section workwhere stability is essential.
Physical Characteristics
Particle structure: Grogged, open body
Plasticity: Moderate to high
Workability: Supportive for handbuilding and carving; stable on the wheel
Drying behaviour: Even drying with low cracking risk due to grog
Green strength: High – holds weight and vertical structure well
Wet clay colour: Natural brown
Fired colour: Deep dark brown to black (temperature dependent)
Surface quality: Earthy, matte, subtly textured from grog
Firing Information
Firing range: cone 6-8
Ideal firing range: 1100 °C – 1240 °C
Low fire (800–1000 °C):
-
Porous, earthen character
-
Medium to dark brown tone
Mid fire (1100–1240 °C):
-
Optimal strength and colour depth
-
Dense, stable body
-
Dark brown to near-black surface
Forming Suitability
✔ Handbuilding and slab construction
✔ Sculptural and thick-wall forms
✔ Carving, incision, and textured surfaces
✔ Architectural or large-scale ceramic work
✔ Wheel throwing (moderate plasticity due to grog)
Surface & Glaze Behaviour
Natural finish:
Highly suitable for raw surfaces, burnishing, oxides, slips, and minimal glazing, where the dark body and grog texture remain visible.
Glaze response:
-
Dark body mutes or absorbs glaze colour
-
Not suited for bright or translucent decorative glazes
-
Best with matte, satin, ash, or oxide-rich glazes
-
Test firing strongly recommended before production
Advantages
-
Grogged body improves drying stability and crack resistance
-
Strong support for large or vertical sculptural forms
-
Rich, naturally dark fired colour
-
Pleasant earthy surface texture
-
Wide firing temperature tolerance
Limitations
-
Reduced smoothness for very fine detail or thin porcelain-like work
-
Glaze colours appear subdued on dark body
-
High-temperature firings require testing for deformation
Recommended Use
Ideal for ceramic sculptors, studio potters, and architectural ceramic artists seeking a dark, grogged stoneware with strong structural performance and a naturally matte, earthy presence.
This clay’s deep dark colour comes from naturally iron-rich minerals carefully balanced for strength and stability — not from artificial stains — making it more reliable, and therefore more expensive, than common black clays.
